Packaging Giant Soars 5%, Market Cap Increases by $1.3 Billion in a Day

Smurfit Westrock PLC (NYSE: SW) surged 5.57% to close at $41.90 on the New York Stock Exchange. Its market capitalization climbed to approximately $21.9 billion (about KRW 31 trillion), gaining roughly $1.3 billion (KRW 1.8 trillion) in a single trading day. Trading volume reached 2.55 million shares.

The company is scheduled to report first-quarter 2026 results on April 30, and Wall Street consensus forecasts a year-over-year decline in earnings per share despite revenue growth. In early February, the board approved a quarterly dividend of $0.4523 per share, maintaining its steady cash-return policy.

Formed in 2024 through the merger of Europe’s Smurfit Kappa and the U.S.’ WestRock, Smurfit Westrock has been listed on the NYSE since July 2024. Specializing in corrugated boxes and recycled fiber-based packaging, the company is widely viewed as a leading beneficiary of rising demand for eco-friendly packaging across North America, Europe and Latin America.
