Elon Musk Executes $300 Million Tesla Stock Option
Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) disclosed on June 16 that CEO Elon Musk exercised approximately 304 million non-qualified stock options, receiving an equivalent number of restricted shares. These shares will vest, subject to service conditions, through January 19, 2028. To settle the exercise price, Tesla withheld roughly 17.5 million shares via net-share withholding, with no open-market sales. After the transaction, Musk reported directly holding about 710 million shares and indirectly holding over 400 million shares through trusts and similar vehicles.

On June 5, a portion of CFO Vaibhav Taneja’s restricted stock units (RSUs) converted into shares, adjusting his direct and indirect holdings. Then on June 8, to cover taxes and secure liquidity related to vesting, he sold approximately 2,600 shares at around $402 each, raising about $1 million in cash (roughly ₩15 billion). In its preliminary second-quarter results, Tesla reported production of approximately 450,000 vehicles, deliveries of about 480,000 vehicles, and the installation of 13.5 GWh of energy storage systems. The company also announced that detailed financial results and an executive Q&A would follow after market close on July 22.
Separately, on July 2 Tesla confirmed Q2 delivery figures of 481,026 vehicles, significantly above the roughly 400,000-unit Wall Street consensus. This represents a 25% year-over-year increase and marks the second consecutive quarter of recovering annual growth. Investors are now closely watching how improvements in electric-vehicle deliveries and strong momentum in the energy-storage business will be reflected in upcoming earnings.
Headquartered in Texas, Tesla manufactures electric vehicles, batteries, and energy storage systems, pursuing a vertically integrated strategy that brings together its branded vehicles, battery production, and autonomous-driving software. As the largest shareholder and CEO, Musk has outlined new business initiatives—such as a robo-taxi–ready “Cybercap” and large-scale AI semiconductor production—emphasizing a long-term vision focused on autonomy, artificial intelligence, and energy infrastructure.
