Oil Prices Surge, New York Stock Market Shaken by Fed Dilemma

On the 17th in New York, U.S. equity markets fell across the board amid a sharp rise in oil prices and renewed interest‐rate concerns. August’s NAHB Housing Market Index came in at 35, beating July’s 33 and forecasts of 34, but the positive signal was overshadowed by energy-driven price pressures. Although July’s CPI cooled to 3.4% year-over-year, oil’s spike since the Iran conflict pushed the 10-year yield from 3.97% pre-war into the mid-4% range, reigniting concerns over further Fed hikes this year. Investors are reducing risk-asset allocations ahead of this week’s release of the July FOMC minutes and signals from Chair Powell at the Jackson Hole symposium.

On the corporate front, defense contractor L3Harris plunged 4.6% after its CEO’s resignation announcement, while Alphabet and Constellation Brands also weakened following Berkshire Hathaway’s stake adjustments. Ahead of earnings from major retailers Home Depot, Target and Walmart this week, trading was characterized by profit-taking and cautious positioning. With the Middle East conflict dragging on and risks in the Strait of Hormuz driving oil between $72 and $102, markets are wary of the “bad combination” of slowing growth and renewed inflation. Internationally, major European indices fell while Japanese and Chinese markets rose on encouraging economic data, leaving the global outlook mixed and uncertainty elevated.
