On the 28th (local time), the New York stock market closed slightly lower amid reaffirmed hawkish Fed policy. The S&P 500 fell 0.2%, the Nasdaq dropped 0.5%, the Dow was nearly flat, and the Russell 2000 small-caps slid 1.4%.

Market attention was entirely focused on Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech. Warsh said inflation is “still high” and hinted at further rate hikes if necessary, driving the two-year Treasury yield up into the mid-4.3% range and quickly pricing in a potential September increase.

Real economy indicators signaled a slowdown. The August Chicago PMI came in at 47.1, well below the market forecast of 57.9 and July’s 57.6, returning to contraction territory (below 50) for the first time in four months. Rising concerns over cooling manufacturing and services activity across the Midwest weighed on cyclical stocks and small-caps.

On a stock-by-stock basis, PayPal stood out with a mid-teens percentage plunge. Reports that private equity firm Advent and fintech company Stripe had abandoned takeover talks—once discussed at up to $50 billion—erased the acquisition premium that had been priced in overnight. Fintech and payments shares broadly underperformed.

Meanwhile, large tech stocks that led the AI rally—such as Nvidia and Salesforce—took a breather after profit-taking following the previous day’s gains; however, on a weekly basis they still posted positive returns, keeping growth expectations intact.

On the global front, despite six months of U.S.-Iran military tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices dipped slightly—WTI fell 0.1% in the $83 range and Brent also edged down—resulting in weekly losses of about 5%. Meanwhile, amid dollar strength and rising rate expectations, gold prices slid around 3% and silver tumbled about 4%.

In summary, with both signs of slowing growth and inflation pressures present, and the view that the Fed could raise rates again gaining traction, the indices experienced a correction while the weekly trend remains resilient. From an investor standpoint, this is a period that requires risk management in light of potential volatility among rate-sensitive and richly valued tech stocks ahead of upcoming employment and inflation data and the September FOMC meeting.
