The Real Reason Behind the New York Stock Market's Bounce After Expected Inflation

On the 11th (local time), the New York stock market snapped its four-day losing streak and rallied across the board. The Dow rose about 1%, the S&P 500 gained roughly 0.8%, and the Nasdaq climbed around 0.9%, recouping a substantial portion of this week’s losses.

The primary catalyst was the August Consumer Price Index (CPI). It increased 3.4% year-over-year, matching consensus estimates and providing relief that “the worst has been avoided,” yet core inflation remained elevated, signaling that inflationary pressures have not been fully tamed. As a result, federal funds futures priced in about a 90% chance of a rate hike at next week’s FOMC meeting, and the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield briefly surged toward 5% intraday before pulling back slightly.

However, crude oil prices and yields, which had weighed on markets in recent days, eased on the session. Oil, which had spiked above $100 per barrel amid intensified Middle East tensions over Iran, fell approximately 2%, returning to near $100 and easing energy-driven inflation concerns. Consequently, among S&P 500 sectors, Communication Services and Consumer Discretionary led the rebound with gains around 1%, while Energy stocks exhibited relative weakness.

On the corporate front, Oracle, which reported earnings after the previous day’s close, beat expectations on strong cloud revenue, sending its shares up over 5% early before trimming gains on profit-taking. Adobe, despite reporting solid results, weighed on growth-stock sentiment with conservative guidance.

Despite this rebound, the S&P 500 still sits about 2% below its mid-August high. Considering Middle East geopolitical risks, oil prices around $100, and the Federal Reserve’s rate decision due next week, investors should review their portfolios for potential volatility rather than take comfort in a short-term rally.
