On September 8, 2026, The Elmet Group Co. (NASDAQ: ELMT) announced that it has signed a definitive agreement, through its newly formed German subsidiary Elmet Technologies GmbH, to acquire the assets of ams OSRAM’s tungsten and molybdenum manufacturing operations in Schwabmünchen, Bavaria, Germany, establishing Elmet’s first European Union manufacturing footprint for refractory metals. The Schwabmünchen facility, a vertically integrated tungsten and molybdenum operation in place since 1961 and recognized with a 2024 Smart Digitization Factory 4.0 award, is expected to become a European production base for powder, rods, wire, electrodes, and machined components, subject to customary regulatory approvals and completion of transition activities, with closing anticipated in the first quarter of 2027. Elmet plans to retain the existing leadership and workforce, invest in equipment, capacity, and quality systems, expand the range of materials (including TZM and tungsten heavy alloy), collaborate with the works council, IG Metall, and the local community, and support ams OSRAM and a recent spinoff under production agreements while assuming supply, quality, and technical support responsibilities for existing customers, all as part of a strategy to enhance supply security and local-for-local production for defense, fusion research, semiconductor, medical, automotive, and industrial customers across Europe and the UK.
